Jace stood at his kitchen counter, staring at the scuffed silver watch Bianca had left behind two days earlier. The leather strap was worn thin at the edges, the face scratched from whatever work she did with her hands. He had picked it up once already, felt the faint warmth it still held from her wrist, and set it back down. Every time he walked past it the thing pulled his eyes, a small proof that she had been here, in his space, even if only long enough to borrow sugar and forget the watch on the way out. He had a theory about that. People who never lingered didn’t leave things behind by accident.

Months of this. Her showing up at odd hours, asking for tools or returning a package that had been left at her door — once, a wrench she could have kept, that he hadn’t even remembered lending. She never lingered. She held herself straight, shoulders square, the sharp jut of her shoulder blades visible under whatever thin shirt she wore that day, the pale ghost of a tan line cutting across her tan arms. He had caught himself noticing the flat line of her chest more than once and hated how quickly his own stomach tightened in response, the way his shirt sat over the small give at his middle. His body felt heavy and plain next to hers whenever they stood close in the hallway. Ordinary. Unremarkable, from the soft of his belly down to the average of everything below it, the kind of body that had never once made anyone look twice. He kept his hands to himself because he knew exactly what would happen if he reached out: nothing, or worse, the polite distance she already kept.

She knocked once and let herself in the way neighbors sometimes did when the doors were never locked between them. Jace turned from the counter. Bianca crossed the small living room without looking at him first, eyes on the watch. Her steps were quiet on the carpet. He watched the long tendon flex along the back of her thigh under faded jeans, the sharp line of muscle in her forearms when she reached for the strap. Up close her skin smelled of warm sun-baked work and the faint trace of motor oil, mixed with the worn leather. His pulse climbed, and he tried to keep it from showing on his face before she noticed.

“Thanks,” she said, buckling the watch on without meeting his eyes. Her fingers brushed the counter where the watch had been. The contact was nothing, but it landed like a spark against the months of watching her move past his door without stopping.

They stood there longer than the errand required. Jace felt the silence stretch, his pulse thick in his throat. She finally looked up. Her gaze held his a beat too long — a half-second where something behind her eyes softened — and then she snapped it level again, the same careful indifference she had worn since the first time they spoke. He told himself he’d imagined the crack. He was good at imagining things where she was concerned. Yet she did not step back.

Her hand lifted, not toward the door but toward him. Two fingers grazed the hem of his shirt, then the skin just above the waistband. The touch was light, almost accidental, but it stayed. Heat spread from that single point across his stomach. He sucked in a breath and held it, certain that any second she would correct herself, withdraw, smooth her expression back into the flat indifference he’d memorized. She didn’t. Her fingertips pressed a fraction deeper, reading him, and her eyes flicked up to his face as if checking what she’d find there.

He couldn’t read her. That was the maddening part. After all this time her face gave him nothing, even with her hand on his skin, even now. He waited for the polite retreat. It didn’t come. Instead her other hand found his shoulder, testing his weight, and she guided him backward two steps until the backs of his knees met the edge of the cushions.

Jace sat slowly, the worn frame of the couch shifting beneath him. Bianca stayed standing between his knees, close enough that the warmth of her thighs reached him through denim. Her lean body blocked the light from the window. He could see the faint rise where her small breasts pressed against her shirt, the tan line of collarbone above it. His hands stayed flat on his own legs because moving them felt like crossing a line he had drawn for himself a hundred times. She looked down at him, breathing steady, then slower. Still he searched her face for the moment she’d change her mind, and still it didn’t come.

She reached for the hem of her shirt and pulled it over her head in one unhurried motion. The flat plane of her chest came bare, small breasts riding high, the tan ending in a sharp pale line below her collarbone. Jace’s mouth went dry. His hands wanted to move and didn’t dare. She took one of his wrists and set his palm against her ribs, letting him feel the warmth of her, the rise of each breath, before she stepped back just far enough to work the button of her jeans. The denim slid down her thighs and she toed it off along with the rest, kicking the heap aside without ceremony. Only the watch stayed, dark against the inside of her wrist.

Then her hands were on him — the hem of his shirt, lifting it, and he raised his arms to let her. He felt absurdly exposed, his soft middle catching the light, but she didn’t look away or pretend not to see. Her fingers found the waistband of his pants and he lifted his hips so she could drag them down. He was already hard, ordinary and average against his belly, and he braced for the flicker of disappointment that never came. She just looked at him, steady, unreadable, and stepped between his knees again. One palm pressed flat to his chest, guiding him. “Scoot back,” she murmured, the first thing she’d said in minutes, and he planted his heels and shifted himself deeper onto the cushions, the couch dragging at his bare skin until his back met the worn give of the backrest.

She followed him down, one knee bracing on the cushion beside his hip, then the other, until she’d settled astride his lap. One hand stayed on his shoulder, the other reaching down between them to guide him as she began to lower herself. He felt the first press of her, the heat of it, and the room narrowed to that single point of contact as she sank down and took him in.

Jace let his head fall back against the couch as Bianca settled fully onto him, her thighs gripping the sides of his stomach. Her tan skin felt warm and taut under his palms where he cupped her small flat breasts, thumbs brushing the faint rise of her nipples. He was already inside her, his average length sheathed in the tight heat of her, and the first slow roll of her hips made him suck in a sharp breath through his teeth.

She moved with deliberate control, lifting and sinking in measured thrusts that kept him buried deep without letting him drive up hard. His softer bulk shifted under her lean frame, the contrast making every contact feel exposed. Sweat gathered at his hairline and along the crease of his stomach where it met her sinewy thighs. The scent of her skin, sun-warmed and faintly salty, mixed with the heavier musk of their joined bodies. His breathing came heavy, almost ragged, each exhale pushing against the restraint he was fighting to hold.

“Fuck, you’re tight,” he muttered, voice low and rough. The words slipped out before he could pull them back. Bianca’s hips kept their steady grind, her flat chest rising and falling under his hands as she arched over him. He felt every inch of himself slide within her, the friction building slow and insistent. His stamina wavered under the months of pent-up want, but he stayed still, letting her set the pace, his fingers tightening just enough to feel the give of her small breasts.

Her rhythm stilled. She went motionless above him, her weight settled deep, the wet pulse of contact holding without movement. Then her voice came into that dead quiet, low but clear. “I made myself act like I didn’t care for months. Couldn’t let myself fall this hard.” Jace’s stomach clenched, disbelief flooding through the haze of sensation — the lingered glance, the wrench she didn’t need to return, the watch she’d forgotten, all of it rearranging into something he’d been too afraid to read. Her hands gripped his shoulders harder for a beat, then loosened, and her hips ground down once more, hard and slow.

The words and the sudden squeeze of her around his average length pushed him over. He came with a choked groan, hips jerking upward once before he could stop them, spilling inside her in short, hot pulses. Bianca followed right after, her wiry body going rigid over his softer frame, a low sound escaping her as her inner muscles fluttered and gripped. Their breathing filled the space, heavy and uneven, neither moving to separate.

They stayed joined, his softening length still held within her warmth. Jace’s mind raced, raw disbelief mixing with the lingering throb of release. His hands remained on her breasts, thumbs now still against the small, sweat-dampened skin. Bianca’s grip on his shoulders had softened into something almost tentative, her fingers resting lightly instead of clutching, the worn leather of the watch cool where it grazed his collarbone. The couch creaked faintly under their combined weight. Neither spoke, but the air between them felt altered, heavier with the admission and the quiet press of skin still touching.
